Project ENRICH serves as a vital bridge to our future by investing in the development of our youth. This distinguished program is specifically designed to provide high school students, starting from the ninth grade, with a solid educational foundation and preparatory experiences that facilitate their enrollment and transition into higher education institutions, particularly those dedicated to the educational advancement of Black youth, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The program enhances students' academic experiences through academic support workshops, college planning seminars, financial aid guidance, college visitations, and career awareness opportunities.
Established in 1982 within the District of Columbia Public Schools, Project ENRICH expanded to Prince George’s County, Maryland in 1985 under the sponsorship of the Gamma Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., continuing its mission to prepare students for successful college careers. Brother Roland Byrd, a respected college educator, played a pivotal role in revitalizing and advancing the program during his tenure as Director, a position he held until his retirement following the 2009-2010 academic year. Brother Dwayne "Pete" Ford led the program during the 2010-2011 transition year, followed by Brother Willie Hines in 2011. Under Brother Hines' leadership, Project ENRICH experienced significant growth in student enrollment and achieved unprecedented graduation rates. In 2020, Brother James Riley, a mentee of Brother Hines, assumed the directorship, successfully modernizing the program and steering it through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He introduced new technology and streaming services, expanding the program's reach to students from South Carolina to New York. His tenure also saw the highest grossing senior scholarship class since the implementation of data tracking.
As of June 2024, Brother Dr. George Montgomery has taken up the mantle of leadership, ushering in a new era for Project ENRICH. Similar to the college experience, students commit to the program for four years, from freshman through senior year. The selection criteria and activity schedule are established during the first year, culminating in an end-of-year assessment. Feedback from students consistently indicates that Project ENRICH is instrumental in enhancing their academic skills, providing valuable insights into careers, guiding them through the college application process, and securing financial aid. Counselors have praised students' positive attitudes and regard Project ENRICH as highly beneficial to their development.
