NEW IDEAS, NEW ENERGY HIGHLIGHT THE START OF 2019-20
Project ENRICH opened its doors on the 2019-20 academic year with a full house, boundless energy, eager students and parents and some exciting new ideas. Close to 100 attended the first session held in the Thurgood Marshall Auditorium on Saturday morning, October 5.
In the course of three hours, students and parents packed in an ambitious set of activities that could easily have covered two sessions. There were introductions of the Team leads for each grade, introduction of a new program coordinator, an inspirational talk from pioneering program founder Bro. Roland Byrd, presentations from some students on what they did over the summer and the always-uplifting and challenging pep talk from Director Bro. Willie Hines. The tenor of his kickoff message was eliminating the financial burden of college, which is an ften-heard theme of the program.
“We need to do something about college student debt,” said Bro. Hines. “So much debt, they have to stay with you! Some kids are already going to college free. We want you to have all the tools in your toolbox.”
Two new wrinkles were added to the mix this year, to great fanfare from the students and parents. For the first time ever, Project ENRICH will have a special Women’s adviser in Mrs. Rita Reese, whose husband, Bill, is a member of sponsoring Gamma Pi Chapter and also was introduced as the new program coordinator for Project ENRICH, The women’s component is designed to help young women prepare for special challenges they face on campus and in the workplace. Also, Bowie State Chemistry professor and motivational speaker Dr. Eric Bonsu, who electrified the crowd with a stemwinder about “being your best,” will visit the program each month to help guide and direct students and provide insight about college preparation from the faculty side. Over the years, Project This year’s Team Leads are Bro. Jason Crump, Esq. (Freshmen), Bro. James Riley (Sophomores), Bro. John Howard (Juniors) and Bro. Andrew Clarke (Seniors).
Project ENRICH is looking forward to another stellar year!
