  • Major accomplishments

Establishment of a four-year (9th - 12th grades) College Preparatory Program designed to assist students with their preparation for college matriculation which lasted for over 40 years … and continues to the present day.

Establishment of definitive relationships with school systems personnel (public and private). Thereby, gaining the support from the personnel (including guidance counselors) to aid in the identification of students that would benefit from the program and ultimately assist with the recruitment of such students for the program. This helped to validate the program as well.

Built awareness (or more awareness) for program participants of historical black colleges and universities (HBCU) as viable options for pursuing higher education degrees.  This was primarily accomplished through the Program providing college tours twice annually and the program (meetings) itself being held at a HBCU.

Establishment of written and speaking competitions (within grade levels); annually compiling the winning essays in a published format.

Program grew to the point of having an average of 220 participates per year with a high of 96 incoming 9th graders.

The securing of grants to assist with the expansion of the program.

  • Challenges

Major challenge was the retention of program participants from one year to the next; This issue was addressed in later years by creating a registration/participation fee ($25 annually); and upon completing the four year program these funds ($100) along with other financial awards earned during their 4-year tenure in the program were presented to the students in the form of scholarships.

  • Vision and Goals

Major goals of program were to aid students in their successful completion of high school and in their preparation for college; and to motivate them to enroll in an institution of higher learning.

  • Memorable Moments

Having the fraternity brothers entering their children in the program and other parents putting all of their other children in the program. (Thus demonstrating the faith in the program and the end results)

Having the students that completed the program return and share their experiences with the program with current participants; indicating their appreciation of the program along with simply saying "Thank You".

  • Advice for future Directors

You must believe in your product and commit yourself to it. The effort put forth displays the commitment.
